Glasgow City Archives and Special Collections, both located on Level 5 at The Mitchell, have a wealth of material relating to the history of Glasgow and its people. From shipbuilding archives to local newspapers, these are freely available to everyone, from curious visitors to academic researchers.
Many finding aids for local heritage material are only available to view in The Mitchell - please contact the staff if you are looking for information about the collections. Some items are unique and/or fragile and readers should follow the guidelines for use in the search room.
Begun in 1877, when a decision was made by the City Librarian to preserve all material relating to the city, this unique collection has grown over the years to provide a unique record of Glasgow's history. It holds a huge variety of material including books, pamphlets, newspapers, photographs and maps. An invaluable resource for both researchers and the local community.

A fascinating collection of historical illustrations featuring Glasgow's buildings and streets, as well as people going about their daily lives. It can be searched by area, street or subject. The images have been selected from those held in Glasgow City Archives, The Glasgow Collection at The Mitchell Library and from the city's museums.

The Family History resources at the Mitchell Library are made up of records from the Glasgow City Archives, the Registrar's Service, the library's Special Collections and the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archives.
The city's history revealed through the public records held in the official archive of Glasgow City Council and its predecessor authorities. These can be viewed in the Archives Search Room on Level 5 at The Mitchell. There are a number of catalogues, databases and indexes available; the archivist can guide readers to the most appropriate one for their research.
