Rachel Joyce is an author who up until now has passed me by. I loved the understated style of her writing, how she describes and triumphs a very ordinary hero who is vulnerable, but at the same time utterly colossal. I also love the way the story weaves in and out of the past effortlessly, bringing reminiscences to life and to the fore. Highly recommended.

Lovely story. Rather sad but lifted by moments of humour. Completes the story of Harold Fry but you don’t have to have read that to fully appreciate Queenie. Wednesday Reading Group at Addlestone Library

Our book group read this and were split - those who liked it, loved it; those who didn't either dismissed it out of hand or found it too depressing. My personal feeling was that it was a challenging concept, beautifully realised and sympathetically written. I found hope in the ending. Perhaps some of the descriptive scene setting passages could have been pruned but I would recommend this book.

Harold is a sweet old man. This is a journey in the literal but also moral sense and is a light read despite the subjects of old age, loneliness, suffering and regret.
