About the collections
We have lots for music lovers to discover. From rare special collections, over 5000 books for lending and reference, online resources to 1200 musical scores, sheet and recorded music.
Would you rather listen to music? Freegal, an online database, has over 13 million songs to stream covering all musical tastes. We have a collection of vinyl LPs covering both classical and rock/pop music. These can be accessed on Level 4 of the Mitchell Library and can be listened to in one of the practice rooms.
Looking to hire? We also have chamber, vocal, orchestral and instrumental scores for hire to music societies and choirs, educational groups and individuals.
We also have an number of online databases that can offer support with research.
The Mitchell Library provides practice rooms for library users. Three of the rooms each contain an upright piano and one has an electronic keyboard. You can also bring along your own musical instrument and enjoy the freedom to practice. Charges apply for hire of the practice rooms and use of the piano.
There are indexes for songs, composers and songwriters as well as for orchestra and vocal scores, and chamber music (these items are listed on our online catalogue). There is also a paper index for vinyl LPs.
