General Curriculum

We have created a Lockdown Learning collection of books to help with homeschooling on our e-book platform Overdrive. Using your library card, you can browse the ‘Libby’ App for titles to download to your phone or tablet and read on your PC for free.

Sumdog Offering interactive learning for maths, spelling and reading. Kids start with games that test their learning level and Sumdog adapts resources to suit them. Sign up for free.

Oxford Owl  Created by the educational publishing house, Oxford Owl has a free eBook library, literacy worksheets and also maths activities. There is a limited amount available on here, but good for a back-up. Sign up for free.

Learn at BBC Scotland  Here you can find lots of resources covering areas such as literacy, maths and science.  

BBC Bitesize  This website provides daily content which is designed to support your child's education and wellbeing.  

BBC Projects  Inspire children and young people with a new project. On this BBC website you can access information on projects such as funding out about your dream job, becoming a young reporter and digital media workshops.  

National Museums Scotland has resources for families and home-based learning.

Advice on Home Schooling

Education Scotland's Parentzone has advice and guidance on how to support your child's learning at home. There are ideas and resources to help support each area of the curriculum and suggestions about how to create a positive home learning environment.

The School Run   With resources to support learning at home, The School Run also offers lots of free tips and resources to help you get organised, including timetables, how to set up a ‘home classroom’ and teaching strategies for parents. They are also offering a free trial to access their resources.

Skint Dad   A daily schedule of celebrity online classes to support learning at home.

Chatterpack  A huge list of weblinks to home-school resources.

Support for STEM

The Maths Factor   Created by Carol Vorderman, this maths resource starts with the ‘daily session’ - a short set of activities to be completed every day. It includes a video clip, followed by a practise round and then the activity. It charts your child’s progress and also offers a huge range of interactive games that you can play afterwards. Sign-up is free during school closures.

Top Marks  Full of interactive maths games, start with the Daily 10 Mental Maths Challenge to wake the kids up! This website allows you to set the challenge level of the games, including how much time to answer questions. Free access, no sign-up necessary.

The Science Museum has a range of resources for home learning.

Glasgow Science Centre    GSC are running a programme of online events #GSCAtHome to support science education during the school closures.

Dynamic Earth has created #DynamicEarthOnline which includes crafting ideas, outdoor learning activities and home experiments.

STEM Learning   Supporting education across science, technology, engineering and maths, resources are mostly ideas for simple science activities that you can do at home. They have introduced a section for home learning with links to tutorials by Scratch (coding for kids) and videos from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Sign up for free.

Geekpack   A three-week coding tutorial for kids. Videos show you how to use Canva, PicMonkey and Scratch. Sign up for free.

The Royal Institution  ExpeRimental is a series of videos with fun science experiments you can do at home. No sign-up necessary.

Code Club  A global community giving children the opportunity to learn to code.

Girls Who Code  A non-profit organiastion which aims to close the gender gap in computer science. During the Coronavirus pandemic they are making computer science educational activities available to download for free. 

Nasa Kids  A place to learn about NASA and space.

Reading, Writing and Literacy

Scottish Book Trust  SBT has a home activities hub and links to their Authors On-Demand video archive. No sign-up necessary.

Booktrust Home Time  Storytime, activities, quizzes and draw-alongs to get kids reading at home.

Authorfy  A creative writing resource with video workshops by children’s authors and a daily 10 minute challenge to get kids writing. Sign up for free.

British Library  A creative writing resource with video workshops by children’s authors and a daily 10 minute challenge to get kids writing. Sign up for free.

Children’s Poetry Archive Aims to equip and inspire. The website is full of tools, strategies and ideas. Resources include structured lessons and curated collections to help provide new and exciting ways of exploring poetry.

National Library of Scotland Discover, explore and learn with the National Library of Scotland's Learning Zone. The website covers everything from literature and creativity to science and technology, politics and exploration. 

NLS holds Scotland’s Moving Image Archive where there is a wide selection of films to view from home as well as Lesson Plans that can be used to support home learning. Explore around 100 years of Scotland's history captured by amateur and professional film-makers.

Harry Potter at Home  All things wizarding inspired by the world’s most famous young wizard.

World Book Day Storytimes Watch a range of authors and well known stars read a range of children’s stories. 

The Virtual School Library Every week a popular children's author or illustrator will provide free books, exclusive videos and their top three recommended reads. This is a partnership with the National Literacy Trust which also has resources for families.
