"The book is a treasure. Initially it can be rather daunting as it jumps backwards and forwards between 1966 and 1969 and because of this I found a second reading very rewarding and enlightening. It is about family relationships, gender roles within a family, bad parenting caused by previous bad parenting and by mental illness and the effect this has on the children. It is about shame and guilt and self-centredness, ignoring what is happening to others, but it is also full of humour and love. A second reading shows how the plot is so cleverly crafted." "A marvellous book! The characters are well-developed, albeit very annoying - I really wanted to slap Edward. My sympathy is primarily with Meg and I feel sorry for Tom and his depression, and poor Adam - well, what an awful life. I so wanted Meg to have a happy ending - maybe she'll marry Luke!" 9/10
