This novel traces the life story of the central character, Kya Clark, from girlhood to maturity and her solitary, lonely, furtive and self-sufficient existence immersed in the ecology and landscape of the coastal marshlands of North Carolina which are described vividly. Kya sees the interactions of local human society in purely ecological terms. The story is a chronological account of her life interspersed with chapters following a murder investigation more than twenty years into the future. Gradually the two narratives collide in a present where the major events of the novel take place. The novel touches on themes of abandonment, exclusion, and loneliness but above all it is a good story; tense, compelling and original. Some aspects of the plot slightly strain credulity but it is a haunting novel that lingers in the mind. Highly recommended. Simon@Stafford
