Patient B After a while one gets into the slow routine of life in 1917 at Craiglockhart War Hospital, outside Edinburgh, with its mentally damaged soldiers. Pat Barker seems to make a point of not rushing the story and there is hardly any plot. And he resists the temptation to make Siegfried Sassoon the hero or even the central character, though the novel ends true to history with the army psychiatrist William Rivers closing Sassoon’s file, writing “November 26th July 1917. Discharged to duty.” “A headlong retreat towards the front” is another way to describe the direction of the novel, though this suggests greater pace than the novel possesses or to which it aspires. It is a surprise to learn, in the author’s afterword, that Sassoon lived until 1967, so certain is Rivers that he is returning to France intent upon dying.
